14th Day of Eaiwe in the year 1031 of the Northern Calendar, the night of the Spirit Eave, some hours before dawn

Snow begins to fall on the empty innyard, as the sounds of battle and the cries of agony cease.

Heavy silence lulls your minds and freezes your bodies, as you lie there on the muddy ground, beaten and exhausted.

Some time later, you awake when someone lights a small fire in the middle of the innyard, far enough away from the cursed building inn as well as from the the other haunted buildings.

Winter has finally reached the southern moors, and its icy grip drowns you into unquiet dreams, as you and the other few survivors gather around the small fire.

It is Rowell, his face hidden under a black cloak, who is the first one to speak up after the end of the battle, his voice nothing more than a rough whisper in the middle of the darkest night:

"What has just happened? - Can anyone tell me that?"

You look at the frightened faces of the others who have shared your fate:

Kalen, Zouki, John and Jacob, the four mercenaries from Mouse.

Mant, pale and disturbed.

Korm, close to give his last breath.

Lily and her children.

No anger or hostility glows in their eyes any more. Just fear.

Someone hands a bottle of bitter alcohol. Jospeh's young son, Basil, silently takes it and drinks.

Tears run from his eyes.

Zouki, still very affected from the scenes at the inn, asks Mant:

"Your sister wasn't ill, was she? - She was a mutant, a cursed werebeast right from the beginning, wasn't she?"

But still, the young nobleman doesn't say a word.

You think that he might have lost his mind for good now.

A while later, Kalen can be heard, more mumbling to himself than adressing to someone other:

"But this poor girl wasn't really a goddess, was she? - Just a mad ghost of the Eaiwe..."

Rowell's eyes meet yours. "What do you think, soldier?"

You might have survived some of the dangers of the Grim Winter, and successfully completed
"The Grim Winter - Episode I: The Night of the Maiden".
Now, while the other victims of the Maiden discuss the events of the night of the walking dead, you may finally rest undisturbed... For a while.

Go on and chat with the other survivors amd plan your next steps carefully...

In ten days, the game will resume it's course with the arrival of "The Grim Winter - Episode II: The Conqueror".

Until then, your characters gain one level and you may add the *Spirit Sense* feat ( Heroes of Horror, Wizards of the Coast, 2005, p.124) to your characters' abilities!

When the dawn comes, the journey will begin anew...

Erdath sits contemplating all that has occurred during the night. He then begins to picture his desperate measures of casting magic missile. The horror of each of those missiles striking those he had spent the night with and taking their life. He seems to have lost all joy over the victory as he looks up and says. "I am sorry for the deaths I caused. It was foolish for me to try and work magics that were beyond my ability. It was a desperate situation and it called for drastic measures. Once among my people again, I will spread stories of this night and of those fallen to give honor to their name. Their lives will be forever remembered in tails sung by bards. I will never be so foolish again." With that he begins to gaze into the fire lost in his own thoughts.

I wrap Korm up in the winter blanket I had brought outside for Jigimy, ages ago, it seems. I then carefully clean my weapons. "Don't feel bad, Erdath. We were all doing whatever we could to protect the rest."

"I plan to go to Silverbell. Korm and Path are hurt badly. They will need a chance to heal before we move on, if that is where they are bound."

Rowell nods to Sven: "We can make our way together for a little while longer, then."

Path's right leg is spalked with some branch and a few bandages and, although he is in a lot of pain, he doesn't show all too many signs of anguish. Path sits by the fire, his legs stretched out before him, because he can't bend them anyway, and stares into the flames. His eyes fill themselves with deep sorrow. A solemn yearning for better times has set itself on his whole body and the tiredness he's suffering from now is clearly showing from the way he's sitting by the fire.

Barovia wasn't much better than this place, he thinks, but at least I had my wife and kids back there.

His mind fills with the remembrance of his family back in Barovia and with the loneliness he must deal with here at the Maiden's Rest. He actually thinks back of several things. One of them is a small adventuring group in a far off realm called Staunton Bluffs. Another is a young wolf pup by the name of Bonaventure, a fancy name he heard once from a travelling bard.

Path's mind's filled with a lot of things in those hours before dawn, and he's not very talkative.

"Thank you Sven, I will think on that, it will take some time to come to grips with what I have done. I will continue on with you to Silverbell. I have not forgotten my goal and yours. I will see it through till the end."

[Assuming that Erdath hasn't spoken in Elven:]

Kalen leans over to the elf for a moment. "Silverbell is burning ground these days. The Afridhi smell that the eastern armies are approaching, and as far as I heard in Loch Gloomen, they have sealed the city. No way to get into it, no way to get out."

"As a mercenary for the Thieves Guild you should realize that no seal is air tight, Kalen. There is always a way through. We just have to find the holes. We will have to wait until we get there to assess the situation, though. I have to say that I had been under the impression when I set out on this quest that Silverbell was a backwater in the Afridhi sphere and that it was not well protected. I was not worried about how I was going to get into town..."

"Mant, Lily, Basil, you have all suffered alot here. What are your plans? Where do you go from here?"

I will make sure that I am sitting next to Korm to be sure he keeps breathing - not that I can do much about it if he doesn't...).

[OOC: What was the fate of the other two woodsmen? There were three and my recollection is that only one was killed in the cellar. I have not heard mention of them since everyone came upstairs. I assume that Kyvaryn and Rotfoot are sitting with us by the fire, as well.]

Under the stairs, Jigimy's fingers begin to stretch as if unused for some time....

His eyes then spring open as he lets out a huge gasp......then a low groan. As he slowly lifts himself to a sitting position, he shakes his head as he begins to take in the surroundings....

"What........what happened?" ...he groans again as he gingerly rubs his stomach "Did I eat some Sea Hag soup or something?...."

From Draussa:

"Me Pal, me pal! Thank Pathmeer you've been restored!" I close my eyes and shake my head towards the sky in obvious gratitude. "Are you hurting?"

"That ghost cast some sort of advanced death spell upon you, though I could not be sure what exactly it was. It appears it may have been something slightly different then what I had thought after all. It is good to have you back with us."

Kalen grins at Jigimy. "I am not sure if it's too good to have you back, small one, but at least you appear to have saved the day."

He hands Jigimy a bottle of brandy.

After a few minutes more, he and Rowell will get up and start to bury Gila and Mandle.

Path sighs a thousand sighs and looks at Rowell and Kalen to see if they're burying Gila and Mandle's weaponry as well.

Path coughs to get some attention on him. "We could use those weapons..", indicating the dead bodies and their equipment. "I don't mean no disrespect, but you know... we could.."

"Two good men..."

Sven gets up and helps with the burials. Afterwards he searches the yard for his crushed shield. When he finds it he looks it over to see if it is repairable.
